Missing Picnik??

I am still sad that there is no more picnik BUT I did find two awesome alternatives.

PicMonkey is very similar to picnik and the best part is that is adding new features all of the time. Collages etc. are going to be added soon according to the site. I have been having a lot of fun with this site!

Picture2Life is a little more advanced but has some cool capabilities.

Go check these two out if you are looking for some online editing sites.

Extravaganza Day 27 ~ Backyard Inspiration

Day 27...time is flying by!

This sadly folks is my back yard. See the stakes? That is where our deck will be. We have been here 3 years and due to medical bills, we have been unable to afford to finish.

This is where Morgan's graduation party will be held, so I have 2 months to get my yard done. So with lots of sweat equity and some bartering and help from friends our yard should be done. Wont be the dream yard I wanted when we bought the house but will be a yard.
A relaxing space for our family.

Here is some of the inspiration I have gathered to help make it a reality.

Love the simplicity of this deck.

Looks Like a Good Weekend To Cross Some To Do's Off The List

Welcome to Alberta where we have two seasons;
Winter and Construction.

This is the view from my front door this morning. On that bench is a little sign that says SPRING. Ahhhh so looks like this is the weekend for me to get stuff done!

My to do list is long but my energy level is very low so we shall see what all I can accomplish.

ONe thing I for sure have to do is dig my way back to a clear dining room table. Guess that means I have to finish all of the projects that I put on there this week.

What are you guys up to??

Hope your day is filled with a little more sunshine than mine!

Extravaganza Day 26 ~ Simplicity is Sweet

Welcome to Day 26.
A simple little blog post all about simplicity. This is a little different post. It is about how to live your life in a more simple way. It involves cleaning but of a different kind. Cleaning and organizing your house will lead to a different kind of de-clutter. A clutter free mind.

Life is busy...hence the name Our Crazy Busy Bunch.

I am slowly trying to change the stress level in our house and our lives.

"Live simply so that others may simply live" ~ Mahatma Ghandi

From doing all of my reading and research I have found there are so many great people willing to help you achieve this lifestyle for free. How awesome is that?

These are a few of the changes I am going to try and make:

  • If it is out of your control, don't waste worry and tears over it.
  • If it isn't useful in your home or in your life, let it go.
  • Figure out what is important to you and do everything in your power to make it happen.
  • Don't expect things to happen quickly...this is a journey. The joy's in the ride.
  • Be present; be in the moment and enjoy it! Listen to the sounds, smell the smells, feel the emotion.
  • Count your blessings and give to those less fortunate.
These are just a few but you get the idea.

If you have anything to add, I would love to hear them!

Extravaganza Day 25 ~ Organizing Pictures

This is my biggest project to date.

Over 13,000 pictures and negatives to organize. It is daunting....even typing it I feel exhausted.

I am breaking the process down into steps.

  1. Organizing online pictures into years and then broken down into events/people/places.
  2. Scan all of the negatives and sort them as above
  3. Load all electronic copies of pictures onto an external hard drive and keep in my safety deposit box.
  4. I already have all of the actual pictures sorted by person but I need to sort them into years or events.
  5. Write on the back of pictures while I can remember
  6. Store actual pictures in a usable format

I found a few pretty storage options.

Extravaganza ~ Day 24 ~ 8 Ideas for Organizing The Garage

Welcome to Day 24...time is a flying by!

Today since I have my garage on my brain, let's talk about organizing our garages!

When we moved into our new house 3 years, the "2 car" garage was so incrediably smaller than our current 2 car garage. I would like to know what kind of cars the designers of the house drive because we can't get one of our vehicles in there let alone two. Mark does put his motorcycle in there though.

Soooooo if we can't park in there, let's organize and make it pretty! We do have some shelves etc. but it just isn't working for me!

Here are eight ideas for garage organizing that caught my eye. Now only if I could convince my husband to do an overhaul in there we will be money!

9 Tips for Taking Fabulous Food Pictures

I was recently featured over at
504 Main

I hope you enjoy the tips I shared. Thank you to Holly for letting me guest post.

Today I am going to give you 9 easy tips on how to take awesome looking pictures of food. Food is hard to take pictures of. I never realized just how hard it was until I try to take pictures of a rockin' recipe and I spend most of my time frustrated on how the pictures turn out. I don't get to share the recipe because I am embarrassed by the pictures.
No more of that!

Through trial and error I have come up with some tips to help. They are in no particular order except I think lighting should determine your photo shoot. If it's raining and yucky, your pictures just won't look as fabulous. You know what that means right? Take out!

 1. Lighting

As bloggers we usually don't have the luxury of a studio and all of its amenities. I don't think my husband would let me get studio lights so my enchilada recipe pics would look better. This means we have to be creative. The best place to take food pictures is outside. Indirect sunlight is the bomb. You want the sunlight to be facing the dish but angled on the side towards the dish. Picture a baseball diamond. If your food was up to bat, you want your sunlight to come from either 1st base or 3rd base. If you have to take pictures inside, do it during daylight hours. My number 1 rule for lighting is NO flash. Ever. It is tempting when lighting just doesn't seem to be working out but the flash makes the picture too harsh looking. Now tell me you won't use your flash...Pinky promise?

It will take your pictures from this...

To this...ta da Only slightly different but much better color!
Just think how awesome this picture would have been if I didn't use such a dark dish and my dark counter.

2. Manual Mode vs. Automatic

Whip out those instruction books if you don't know how to use your camera on manual. It is so very hard to take a good food picture in automatic. If you read any of the old recipe posts on my blog, you will see why! Manual mode and basic knowledge of how to use aperature and shutter speed is 100 times better than automatic. Aperature settings allow you to determine the amount of light being allowed in to the image sensor, basically how much light being let in to the picture. There are lots of excellent beginner tips that explains aperature and shutter speeds. Google or Pinterest  the word aperature and you will be pleasantly surprised at how generous people are with the help they are willing to give you. Once you get the hang of manual, you will be so happy with your pictures, not only food but pictures of everything, I promise!

3. Prettying Up Ugly Food

Pea soup; while it is delicious, it is not very attractive. When taking pictures of an ugly food, rely on pretty serving dishes or table scapes. Another trick is to make the majority of the focus not on the food, but on it's surroundings. I found an excellent example of that at Food Republik. I also found a recipe for green pea and basil soup. Win win. The color of the soup is bold and plays off the white bowl. By using a large lipped bowl, they were able to create balance. I also love that they added peas and basil to the top of the soup. By building up the dish, it gives extra texture and draws your eye in.

4. Angle and Depth

Pay close attention to the angle of your pictures. I tend to take all of my food pictures from a bird's eye view. But depending on your food subject you may want to try a variety of angles. Try arranging yourself in different positions around your dish. Taking 20 pictures of one object isn't wrong, in fact it's great practice.

5.Arranging More Than One Dish

I found the above picture on Pinterest and instantly fell in love with it. I never would have thought of putting two dishes inside of one another. So simple yet so beautiful. This picture was sold from the etsy store but there are plenty of other great pictures. Visit Butterfly Food to check them out.

6. Editing

Many photographers don't like to edit photos but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using an editing programs to enhance your picture. I use Photoshop Elements and really enjoy all of the options. Use your photo editing software to change the white balance and adjust the brightness by a skooch (skooch is a technical term in my house). One tip; always keep an original copy in a different folder. That way you can make numerous adjustments but always have your original. I learned this the hard way.

7. Hold Your Camera Steady

This is a really simple fix! If you don't want to use a tripod or have access to one, don't fret! This is a really easy fix. If you are taking close up shots, use your elbows as leverage on the table or ground to stead the camera. If you are standing, hold your arms close to your body and give them a little squeeze. This helps to ensure a steady hand. For my professional work, I do a lot of incident investigations and I use this stance all the time.

  8. Practice, Practice, Practice

This is the fun part! You won't get better and learn how your camera works if you don't practice. So not only do you get to cook a lot of new wonderful meals, you get to take a lot of pictures! I find the best way to practice using my camera in manual is to go for a walk and play around with light, shadows and shoot a variety of objects.

9. Tutorials From Photographers

Here are my favorite 3 blogs that have great tips.
There are so many more but these are my go to ones.

Good luck with your picture taking!!

Extravaganza Day 23 ~ Landing Zone

Welcome to Day 23! Wow this month has flown by hasn't it?!?

Today I wanted to share my landing zone with you. I adore it. I also wanted to show you a few landing zones online that I hope will inspire you!
A lot of landing zones that you find online also has a bulletin board or hooks for the coats but because our house is open plan, everything is within steps of the entry. I didn't want to much clutter in this area.

This little lovely sits in my entry way and holds everything we need to start and finish our day.
Those of you that know me knows I la-ove to label, so of course the bins are labeled.
Our keys go in the little basket.

We each have our own basket plus there is one for Soccer and Out Going. Anything that leaves the house (mail, library books etc. goes in the Out Going bin)

Extravaganza Day 22 ~ Organizing Cleaning Supplies

I thought I would make today's post all about organizing our actual cleaning products.

This is what I use but it may not work for you. I would love to know how you all store and organize your cleaning supplies.

I like to keep a full set of cleaning supplies on each floor. Saves a lot of time!

Upstairs, I keep my supplies in my linen closet. I can take what I need from the little basket or I can remove it and take it from room to room.

Main floor powder room. I keep all of my cleaning supplies under the sink because my kids are all grown up. If you have little kids, please keep them out of harm's reach.

I like to keep all of my Swiffer products and my cleaning clothes in clear bins. And of course if you store things in bins, you get to use labels!
